Islam Awareness Week (IAW) has been taking place in many towns and cities across the UK since 1994, however, for the last 8 years a theme has been chosen which highlights an issue which is of common concern across communities. This is because the main idea is to promote social cohesion rather than emphasising differences.
During IAW many different community organisations get involved in activities that bring people together. It is a project that has received support from all major political parties with previous launches taking place in the Houses of Parliament and Mayor of London's offices. IAW has also been supported and launched at other major cultural venues such as at the Shakespeare’s Globe theatre and the Royal Geographical Society in London.
Previous Year's themes were:
2008 - Celebrating the Best of Britain
2007 - One World: Our Children, Our Future
2006 - One World - The Myth of the Clash and Saving Our Planet
2005 - Hidden History: Islam in Britain
2004 - Neighbours
2003 - Our Common Heritage - Muslim Contribution to Civilisation
